Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Melbourne?
One of the most common questions we get from homeowners across Melbourne's western suburbs is whether they need council approval before a tree comes down. The honest answer: it depends on your council, and on the tree.
What usually triggers a permit requirement
- The tree is a native or significant species protected under a local planning overlay
- The trunk is above a certain diameter or height threshold set by your council
- The tree is covered by a Significant Landscape Overlay or similar planning control on your property
What usually doesn't need a permit
Many councils allow removal without a permit for:
- Dead, dying, or clearly hazardous trees (though you may need to document this)
- Small ornamental or fruit trees below the size threshold
- Trees that are an immediate safety risk (emergency provisions vary by council)
Our advice
Rules differ enough between Melbourne councils that we don't recommend guessing. When we quote a removal, we check whether your specific tree and council are likely to require a permit, and we can guide you through that application if needed — so you're not caught out after the fact.
